However there came a day when Lorelei realised that she had read every single book in the library twice and, taking a good look at her surroundings for the first time in her life, she decided there was nothing to keep her in this small provincial town. So at the tender age of 87 she bid farewell to the monks and clerics who were the only companions she had ever known, and went out into the wide world outside Aldersford. Arriving in Drakenwood, she predictably headed straight for the library, and spent a day shut up in the Keep reading all the information on the town, its history and its laws. She also learned all she could of the seven adventurers’ guilds scattered outside the town. That very evening, she borrowed a map from Fitz the cartographer and set out for the Guild of Warmages, where she was accepted into their number as a novice magician.
She quickly settled in, and started clawing her way up the ranks as fast as possible. Her obvious thirst for knowledge and power caused her to be noticed by several people, amongst them the irascible old Cleric/Warmage Tskaaron Kaste. He took an unusual interest in the young mage, and a few weeks later the two announced their betrothal causing something of a scandal, as Tskaaron had been married to the mother of his three daughters for many years, seeking divorce only after his meeting with Lorelei. There were many who called him foolish for having his head turned by a girl young enough to be his granddaughter; words harsher than merely foolish were applied to her, but she ignored the critics and kept her head held high.
It was during their betrothal that she first met Kelda Rockbiter, as Tskaaron introduced Lorelei to his fellow Clerics. The two formed an instant bond. When Lorelei returned from her honeymoon, Kelda took her to one side, and revealed herself to be Lorelei’s mother. Pouring out the story of her failed relationship with Lorelei’s father Anubis, Kelda explained how she had been under such strain at the time of her daughter’s birth that the midwife had believed her incapable of caring for the baby, which was taken to the Aldersford clerics to be looked after. Kelda added that she had discovered her daughter’s whereabouts some time ago, but had chosen to keep her distance, doubting whether Lorelei would want to know the mother who had apparently abandoned her at birth.
But Lorelei left her mother in no doubt that she was thrilled to find at last the family she had so often wondered about. Encouraged by this reaction, Kelda resolved also to contact Pryderi, her son by Anubis, while Lorelei made her acquaintance with her father; and so the whole family was reunited. Moloch’s love and respect for his wife prompted him to offer both her children the chance to adopt the Rockbiter name, which they accepted thus causing Lorelei’s first blazing row with her spouse, who had never been satisfied with her refusal to take his name, and was distressed by what he saw as a further rejection. But she soon learned how to soothe Tskaaron’s bruised ego, and the two are still together in wedded bliss.
